She was born in 1949.Bedi was a former Asian Games Women's Tenies champion.In 1972 jion a polic officer.Single-handedly, she chased away sword-wielding demonstrators, armed only with a baton circa. Alone she fought fiercely against bootlegging and drug addiction. All offending vehicles breaking traffic rules were towed away during her tenure. A tussle with lawyers then hit the headlines, and when the controversy died down, she hit the news headlines yet again when she was posted in Tihar Jail, and brought about reforms there which were outstanding and are world famous now
Kiran Bedi to receive the 1994 Ramon Magsaysay Award for Government Service, the Board of Trustees recognized her building confidence in India’s police through dynamic leadership and effective innovations in crime control, drug rehabilitation, and humane prison reform.
She was selected in 2003 to prepare guidelines for the UN in all aspects of police reform and inputs for restructuring the police in countries that the UN decided to go to.

A few weeks ago, I submitted my application for VRS. I have not received any reply in this regard," Bedi said.

The 1972 batch IPS officer said so far she had worked within the system to reform it, "but from now onwards I will work from outside".

Asked if she was upset with the government's reluctance to keep its reported promise to accommodate her in a top position in a para-military force, she said "that is not the case. My desire to work from outside the system made me take this decision."

Bedi had gone on a "protest" leave in July after Y S Dadwal was appointed as Delhi Police Commissioner superseding her.

Asked how long the processing of her application will take place, Bedi said if the government decides it can do so in a day.

"That's what happened in the case of former Delhi Police Chief K K Paul. His application was processed in a day and he was able to join UPSC," she claimed.

Bedi refused to comment on whether she would join politics.

Sources in BPRD said she was not attending office for the last ten days.

"Normally she discusses everything with us. We are surprised at this move," a senior BPRD officer said.

“ ‘Doing Time, Doing Vipassana’, the film that describes the way in which Vipassana had been used to change the behaviour of the inmates won acclaims around the world,” said Ms. Bedi.

Ms. Bedi, who had earned the sobriquet “Crane Bedi” for her firmness in dealing with traffic violations in the Capital, has won a number of awards over the years, including the President’s Gallantry Award. She also had the honour of serving as the United Nations’ Police Adviser.
